Whiteman AFB/Knob Knoster Area Guide

General Information

Located approximately two miles from Knob Noster, Whiteman Air Force Base sits a mere 70 miles from Kansas City, Missouri. Home to the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman operates the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber joining conventional aircraft in defense of the country.

Established in 1942 as Sedalia Glider Base, Whiteman AFB is a joint service base, home to Air Force, Army and Navy units. Whiteman offers group tours to organizations, but if you want to take a look around, call and make reservations as early as possible, WAFB is a very popular place to visit!

Whether you’ve decided to live on base or find civilian housing nearby, Whiteman offers full services for families and individuals from household goods to temporary lodging and a fully stocked commissary.

City of Knob Noster

Located on popular U.S. Highway 50, Knob Noster is that small town you’ve always wanted to live settle down in. Home to the Whiteman Air Force Base, the population may be small (around 3,000 people) but their heart is big and residents’ love of their quaint home shows.

Just minutes from Knob Noster State Park and less than half an hour from Sedalia (home of the Missouri State Fair) Knob Noster offers great shopping and a short ride will bring you to the Kansas City Malls to enjoy big city shopping.

Pony Express Museum
Enjoy a great day trip and travel back in time when you visit the Patee House Museum. When it opened in 1858 it was a four star luxury hotel and headquarters to the Pony Express.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum
Visit the last home of Laura Ingalls Wilder and see where she wrote the world famous Little House Books. Tour the recently restored rock house that Almanzao and Laura lived in and enjoy the memorabilia actually mentioned in the Little House books.

Kansas City Zoological Gardens
Divided into several areas, this 200 acre park houses approximately 1200 animals Cross the swaying bridge to Africa or even feed the sheep in Farmland USA. Even ride a camel, a pony or take a train ride!

Knob Noster State Park

Enjoy outdoor activities from camping, fishing, picnicking and hiking just to name a few in this interesting mix of prairie, savanna and forest over nearly 4,000 acres that lay along a meandering creek. Lakes offer great fishing and boating and nearby picnic sites dot the lakeshore.
